Short Graphic/Picture Books | Reviews

I have an upcoming post coming about the graphic novels/comic volumes that I've read recently, but I wanted to do a separate post for these ones as I think they're sort of a category of their own. I love picture books for those evenings when you've had a particularly hard day, or you just aren't feeling up to reading a long chapter and still want to sit down with a story.
Here are a few that I read over the summer:

Raven Girl by Audrey Niffenegger

This is an original new fairytale that starts with a postman and a raven that fall in love. They have a child, the raven girl and the story follows her life as she grows up being half bird, half human.
It's an odd little story from start to finish, but there's something quite charming about it. I gave this 3 out of 5 stars.

Jane, The Fox & Me by Fanny Britt and Isabelle Arsenault

Helene isn't having the best time at school. She finds it hard to fit in, doesn't have any friends and is generally miserable all the time. That is until she reads her book. Helene loses herself in the story of Jane Eyre and it helps to brighten her days as she deals with bullying, low self esteem and anxiety.
The story is told in all shades of grey, except the parts where she is reading and the pages are full of colour. It's a cute, beautifully illustrated and relatable short graphic novel. It's target audience is middle grade, but I think all ages will find enjoyment out of this one. I gave this 4 out of 5 stars.

The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil by Stephen Collins

Meet Dave, he lives in a place called Here. Here is very orderly, neat and every citizen is expected to be clean shaven. Dave is bald but has one hair on his chin which he removes daily. One day it grows back a little quicker and he is mortified, but it keeps growing back at an alarming rate until he ends up with a really large and rather stubborn beard. The story follows how this affects Dave and the other inhabitants of Here.
I love the art style of this one and it's a funny/extreme take on society's expectations and reactions to things that are "other". I gave this 4 out of 5 stars.
